Time to Buy New Fabric!

My fabric stock is beginning to run low (close to 50% left) and it's time I search for new fabric print/design. Exciting, yes... ;)

I have set my sight on a few cute/cheery/bright ones, but would love to hear from you, customers/followers alike ... especially if you have any specific "loves" on any designer at all. If it suits my "taste" (or rather, falls within the theme of The Laughing House items & of course, my budget), I'll not hesitate to get it!

These 3 designs I put up here are just some that I'll be getting...one of it is a request from a customer. I'm most likely going to stock up on the Aviary series as well, since they were highly sought after by many of my customers. I'm also contemplating getting the Black Lily version (I've got the Red Lily, and Lily Espresso ones, and they were also popular) for the Black & White lovers. I'm hesitating simply cus my mom hates working with dark fabric, as her eyesight isn't so good lately.

Feel free to let me know what you think of these fabric, and if you have other choices at all. I'd love to hear from you. Please leave a comment here, and don't forget to add a link (so that I can see the fabric immediately) or even contact me directly @ The Laughing House.

I'll be waiting :D

Happy Lunar New Year!!!

Each year, friends around me will ask, what will I be doing to celebrate the coming of the Lunar New Year. No exception this year.

A neighbour saw my son few days ago, and asked if we're Chinese. When she saw me coming out, she asked if we celebrate Chinese New Year. I hesitated before replying, and she immediately said (as if giving me a way out) "I suppose, not really huh?" with a smile, and I smiled back.

That prompted me to think about the meaning of "celebrating Chinese New Year", as I assume (if this year is anything like the past years) that friends will be asking me this question again.

Although I'm Chinese, I have very vague impressions of "celebrating Chinese New Year" as a kid, when I was still staying with my parents in Indonesia. Lots of food, relatives coming, and us visiting others, red packets, new clothes and all. Up till I was 8 years old, and from 9 onwards, I was in Singapore either with relatives, or other housemates (I lived in a boarding house during my growing up years here).

Now that I'm grown up, married, and with kids of my own, I find it hard to inculcate the "celebrating Chinese New Year" tradition, as I don't grow up being an active part of "doing" these. At the same time, I found it fascinating (or amusing?) when I heard tales of my friends enjoying it so much during their growing up years, and enthusiastically looking forward to it now as an adult. They said, it's the tradition, something we need to upkeep as Chinese.

I agree. But it's not easy (or natural) for me & family now. Up to the 30th, I didn't buy a single Chinese New Year goodies/cookies, or do anything out of the norm (spring cleaning, decorating the house etc). I simply don't feel the need, nor the urgency.

2 nights ago, after putting our kids to bed, my husband needed to go to the supermarket to buy milk powder. After a seemingly long trip, he came back buying lots of things. To cut the long story short, I'm glad he went and bought that night. Cus, during the New Year's eve (last night) where other families are gathered together for Reunion Dinner, we were also able to gather together (4 of us) and had some semblance of the Reunion Dinner mood, having "steamboat" style dinner, except, it was cooked over the stove, and the soup presented in a bowl on the dining table. Hehe...but, it was good, and we enjoyed it.. eating the various stuff put inside that we don't normally buy or eat on "normal" days.

I feel satisfied, and contented. For after all, what's the meaning of "celebrating Chinese New Year" ? It's about families, coming together in unity, and welcoming the New Year together.

We decided, that next year, we're going to do that, and return to our parent's houses in Indonesia. They'll definitely welcome the idea :)

Here's wishing all Chinese reading this, a Happy & Prosperous Lunar New Year! GongXi Gongxi!!!

Aqua Quartz Pearl Earring

Love my newly created earring, with Aqua Quartz and Freshwater Pearls. Don't they look sweet, demure, feminine, gentle... you get the idea, lol...

I feel, anything with Pearls, will definitely go well with brides. However, I'd understand if some brides don't want to have any other colours on their jewelries aside from the traditional white or cream, symbolizing purity.

But, if you're a "modern" bride, having your wedding on the beach, with a simple carefree white dress, I think this earring will be the perfect piece to match the occasion! ;)

Please contact me if you are interested in getting a matching necklace or bracelet made. And, thanks for looking, I hope you'll love it!

Kokeshi Love

I was expecting an important package from my mom today, and even sms (messaged) the postman when he'll be coming. But no replies from him (I understand that he don't like me calling or messaging him) so, I decided to go ahead with my afternoon nap with the kids as usual.

Quite a mistake, as the postman came by around 4:35 pm, and left after leaving a delivery notice. When I woke up at 5:30 pm, the first thing I did was to call him. But unfortunately, he has gone back, and asked me to call the hotline for a redelivery.

*Bummer* ... to make matters worse, I can't quite make out the tracking number he wrote on the delivery advice. So, I had a hard time getting it through the automated hotline, and also faced the same problem with online checkpoint.

After a long wait, I managed to get hold of a customer service officer, who managed to track my item, and we arranged for a redelivery tomorrow morning. *Relieved*

Back at Etsy, I was just idly browsing through the treasury, and to my surprise, found my Mini Accordian Purse featured in this 'Kawaii' Kokeshi Love ;)

It's quite a nice comfort after the failed delivery attempt by the postman. Hehe...

Thank God it's Friday!!! Well, it's actually Thursday night where I am now, but equally glad it's Thursday night, cus my husband will be coming back from Bangladesh on tonight's flight, and will reach home early Friday morning. ;)

As usual, whenever he goes on such business travel, the week appears to crawl, and I really have to "drop" everything just to tend to the kids. School, meals, bath time, homework, play, nap time, bed time etc.

This explains why for the entire of this week, I'm just totally "not in the mood" to craft, or even "socialize" (aka promote) online. Kinda like MIA (missing in action) hehe....

When the kids are in bed, I'm totally not in the mood to make jewelries or even logon, with the exception of checking sales on the shops. Hm.... come to think of it, there was nothing to check on, as these few days were another round of "sale-less" days, hehe... I've come to realize that, my lack of being online (promoting) does affect sales after all.

Well, let's say I'm on a week's break (yea right!) Now, I gotta gear myself to get "working" again come Monday. For the time being, I'll enjoy the weekend, and of course, having DH home again. ;)

Welcome home, Sayang!

Guess Where?

No prize for guessing it right... but can you guess where this is? ;) Hm...Singaporean readers may have a higher chance of getting this right, hehe...

I'm not one to keep you in suspense... this was actually taken in the toilet at Great World City, a mall near downtown Orchard Rd in Singapore.

I thought I've seen a similarly "decorated" toilet before, but cant quite remember where. When I saw this, I found it pretty amusing, and just had to take a snapshot to put up here. Though it was pretty embarassing if anyone were to see me taking pictures in the toilet. So, I had to do it fast while no one was around, hehe...

Talk about wall art! ;)

Kyanite Gemstick Necklace & Earring Set

Kyanite Gemstick Necklace/Earring Set

Simple, & "cool" ;)

The very first piece that I create this year, using Kyanite gemsticks. I did some search on google for this gemstone, and the right word that was repeatedly used to describe it was : brittle. This, partly because this gemstone has varying degree of hardness.

If I take a closer look, the impression it gave me was that some blue ink was dropped into this pool of crystal, which was eventually caught, & frozen. That "explains" the uneven and botchy patch of blue and brown.

I love the colour and overall look right from the beginning, as blue has always been a natural favourite for me. But Kyanites just made it look so "cool" :)

I've long decided that these gemsticks will be "put up" simply into this necklace, as it's already spectacular in itself. And created into a 24" long necklace, it'll hang right down to the mid-chest level, which will display these beauties perfectly. A matching earring is also made... simply of course.

Thanks for looking!

It's a small world after all!

Me, Susien & Suting enjoying ice blended coffee@ starbucks, Wisma Atria.

Finally get to meet up with "old friends", whom I've not met for almost 20 years! We used to live in the same house under the same "guardian" back in 1987 when I was still in primary 4, but lost touch soon after when I moved out in 1988.

It's amazing what technology, specifically FaceBook enabled us to do these days! I "met" Suting again through FB, and many others as well.

It's kinda nostalgic as meeting childhood friends brought back many memories, and opened my eyes to looking back 20 years in time, and seeing the different routes we took to where we are today.

On the way home, I saw another ex-classmate whom I've not met for the past 10 years! We chatted, and exchanged cards. After she left, I was still deep in thoughts & amused by what happened that day...but, this "amusing" day seems to have another "surprise" waiting for me.

When I reached the train station where I was getting off, I saw another friend, again from 10 years ago! Wow...is this a coincidence or what? hehe... it made me "philosophical" all of a sudden, and wondered is this an introduction to what the year 2009 holds for me? Meeting up with "old" friends? Catching up on lost times, restoring relationships? Hm....seems exciting, though a bit "scary" (if you know what I mean), as I'm the type of person who's happily snuggled up in my cosy little shell, and not overly bothered if I dont call a friend or vice versa.

But as time passes, I realized that my social circle has broadened indeed, and the number of acquaintances increasing... BUT, the pool of FRIENDS seems to have shrunk due to the years of neglect, and each living our own lives, busy with our own routines.

If this is where God is leading for 2009, I hope that I'll be truly open to ALL the possibilities. In this "universal village" where we live in, our own family members may be scattered all over the world, but internet & flight travel has made meeting up not that difficult after all. It's just a matter of whether we're willing to open up our hearts again, to let people who's passed through our lives cross paths with us again, and "containing" them the second time round.

It's a small world after all!

Have A Wonderful New Year!!!

OK, 1st January 2009 is finally here ;) I've just sat down and considered for a few minutes my "New Year's Resolution".

In today's newspaper, I read an article on this subject. The suggestion was, keep it short, & achievable. Say, 2 or 3 points only. Else, write it down just to see it broken. I don't intend mine to be that way. Hopefully I can blog about this on 31st Dec 2009, that all 4 were achieved.

New Year's Resolution (2009) - aka : Things to do ;)
1. Buy a new flat. We've talked about this a lot, and "planned" for it, just waiting for the right timing, with a time frame of not later than July, as that's the time we need to register for a primary school for Hans.

2. Disciplined monthly savings so that we can go for a family vacation around Sept. This responsibility (disciplined saving) falls on me, from my Etsy income. We're thinking of Taiwan, as the temperature is pretty mild around that time, and the distance manageable (I hope so) for the kids. Cost is pretty reasonable too ;)

3. Exercise regularly. I've started jogging few months back, and just "lost steam" along the way. Now, is setting it at twice a week achievable? Experts said that we need to exercise at least 3x a week for it to be beneficial for our health. So, let me start with 2x, ... and a new swimsuit will be nice. *Mental note: Get a new swimsuit.* Twice a week is better than once, or none at all right?

4. Read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. I set this same goal last year, and didn't manage to complete it. Though I've read the entire bible at least once before, I think it will benefit me greatly if I can go through it again, and understand my bible more. I intend to have 3 starting points, with Genesis, Psalms, & Matthew. So that at any one time, I'll be covering the Old & New Testament. Hm....3 bookmarks now? hehe...

Have you thought about YOUR new year's resolution? Take 5 minutes, and write them down. It'll help start your first day of the new year with higher/greater/clearer....resolution? *smile*

Once again, Have an exceptional New Year, & may it prove fruitful (when you work hard at it) with God's favour, mercy, protection & blessings upon you & family.
